The spring salmon runs in the cool crisp waters of Oregon have become major annual events for many. You may choose to fish these amazing creatures on your own, but to find just the perfect spots, you might want to find yourself a good salmon fishing guide.
The season starts in the middle of March for finding some of the finest Spring Chinook Salmon. These 15-40 pound beauties can be found in narrow migration paths on the Rogue River as they head to the Upper Rogue toward their spawning beds. Boats are usually anchored in the 3-6 foot waters as they intently watch for the speeding fish moving upstream. This run of salmon is in the Lower Rogue River and Gold Beach, Oregon, and will last through early June. Starting in late May through late July, you will find them best in the Upper Rogue River, which is near Medford, Oregon. They say anchovies and spinners work as the best bait in the lower sections of the river, where bounced roe and plugs seem to work best in the upper river.
There is also a fall salmon run which starts mid-September and ends in December. This salmon run features the Fall King Salmon which can range from 15-60 pounds. However, the majority are usually between 25-40 pounds. These salmon are a larger, stronger fish and can tend to give even the experienced salmon fisherman a real challenge.
There is usually a limit of 2 on each day’s catch, but it all seems worth the while. The best areas to find these beautiful creatures in the fall would be the wild and scenic Rogue River, Chetco River, Elk River, and Sixes River, in Oregon. The Rogue River is known for having some of the world’s best Spring Chinook Salmon.
