Wind energy is the clean, renewable source of energy that is natural, environmentally friendly, and available universally.
Wind power is converted into energy by wind turbines. These turbines are not unlike conventional turbines, the only difference being that wind turbines use wind to turn the turbine blades which then goes on to generate electric power. There are two types of wind turbines, the horizontal axis turbine and the vertical axis turbine. Most modern designs for wind turbines use the horizontal axis type.
Wind farms are a collection of wind turbines, grouped together into an integrated power plant, which feeds into a power grid for distribution to consumers of electricity. The advantages of wind energy include the fact that wind is a free, inexhaustible, renewable, clean, and environmentally desirable source of power. One concern with wind power is aesthetics relating to the visual impact of wind farms. Another has to do with the fact that wind does not blow constantly and is intermittent in nature. Yet another issue has to do with the transport modalities of power generated from wind. Whereas demand for electric power is centered on major urban areas, generation of wind power, by necessity, have to be in remote rural areas, far away from the demand centers.
Technological research is making advances, which have resolved many issues related to wind power and will continue to do so. Whether or not wind energy supplants fossil fuels as the major source of energy, it will always be a significant factor as the world searches for clean and renewable sources of energy.
